Why Solar Matters Now?

As New Zealand accelerates its shift toward a net-zero carbon future by 2050, solar energy has become more essential than ever.

Why is solar energy important? With rising electricity demand from electric vehicles, heating systems, and industry, solar farms offer a clean, scalable solution.

They boost energy security by supplying reliable power—especially when hydro or wind generation dips—and help reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. In short, solar is no longer just an alternative; it’s a key part of the solution.

Clean Energy with Real Impact

What can a solar farm do? A solar farms generate clean, renewable energy with zero emissions, helping New Zealand reduce its carbon footprint.

They improve energy security by diversifying supply, especially when hydro or wind is low.

With low operating costs, quick deployment, and the ability to use underutilised land, solar is a cost-effective and scalable solution that also supports local jobs and long-term energy resilience.

At Trilect, we specialise in solar farms and commercial rooftop systems, helping businesses and landowners unlock the full potential of solar energy.

Solar energy is a renewable source of energy that can be converted into electricity using a range of ever improving techniques. Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels are currently the most widespread type of solar PV technology, however other types of solar PV are being developed that can be integrated into buildings, such as flexible PV and even PV paint.

Solar panels convert sunlight—not heat—into electricity. In fact, high temperatures can reduce their efficiency. Each panel contains silicon-based photovoltaic cells, protected by a glass cover and supported by a metal frame with internal wiring. Silicon is a semi-conductive material, which allows it to absorb sunlight and generate an electric current. Here’s a simple breakdown of the process: Sunlight is made up of tiny particles called photons. When photons strike the silicon cells, they knock electrons loose from the atoms. The movement of these electrons creates an electric current, known as the photovoltaic effect. This current flows through the panel’s wiring to an inverter, which converts it from direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC) electricity for use in homes and businesses. This all happens instantly whenever light hits the panels.
Yes. Solar energy pairs well with other renewables like wind and hydro. In New Zealand, it complements hydro power especially well — providing electricity during dry periods when hydro reserves may be low.
Solar panels don’t produce electricity at night, and output drops during overcast weather. However, solar farms are connected to the national grid, so energy supply remains stable regardless of daily sunlight levels.
Residential solar typically powers a single home or business, while a solar farm feeds electricity into the grid at a much larger scale. Solar farms also benefit from optimal site selection, advanced infrastructure, and economies of scale.
A solar farm is a large-scale installation of solar panels that captures sunlight and converts it into electricity. The energy is transmitted through inverters and high-voltage power lines to the local power grid. Solar farms operate quietly, require minimal maintenance, and work as long as sunlight is available.
Yes. Around 96% of a solar panel’s materials can be recycled or reused, including glass, silicon, and metals. While large-scale recycling isn’t yet widespread in New Zealand, the long lifespan of solar systems means recycling options will continue to expand.
