solar farms

What is a solar farm, really?

You’ve probably heard the term “solar farm” before—but what does it actually mean?

A solar farm is a large-scale installation of solar panels spread across several hectares of land. Unlike rooftop solar systems that power a single home or building, solar farms generate enough electricity to supply entire communities. The power goes straight into the grid, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.

In New Zealand, these farms range in size from a few megawatts to several hundred, and many now include battery storage to deliver power even when the sun isn’t shining.

Clean, quiet, and efficient—solar farms are helping shape a more sustainable future.

why is solar farm catching on?

Solar farms are gaining momentum in New Zealand—and the numbers back it up.

Solar farms NZ are on the rise, with a record 128MW generated on 6 March 2025, according to the Electricity Authority.

The main driver is cost. With solar panel prices falling, large-scale farms are now cheaper to build and operate. As power bills climb and demand for clean energy grows, solar farms NZ are proving to be a smart, affordable solution.

Land Owners, what do you need to know?

Everything you need to know about hosting a solar farm on your property in New Zealand.

Solar farms require good amounts of land (minimum 3 hectares)

Solar farms require flat land and can accommodate light grazing activities (such as sheep only).

All renewable energy projects require a connection to the electricity grid. This means a nearby 11-33 kV power line is essential for any potential sites.

If you think your land might be suitable to accommodate a solar farm and would like to find out more please contact Trilect Solar today!

frequently asked questions

At Trilect, we specialise in solar farms and commercial rooftop systems, helping businesses and landowners unlock the full potential of solar energy.

Residential solar typically powers a single home or business, while a solar farm feeds electricity into the grid at a much larger scale. Solar farms benefit from optimal site selection, advanced infrastructure, and economies of scale.

Solar farms are connected through substations or local distribution networks. Our engineering team works closely with electricity providers to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient integration of solar power into the grid.

Solar farms are generally low-profile, with panels standing under 3 metres tall. Most sites are screened by trees or shrubs, much like orchards or shelterbelts. As the vegetation matures, visibility from roads and neighbouring properties is further reduced.

While solar panels can generate heat, their impact is minimal compared to urban heat islands. Strategic panel spacing, vegetation, and airflow help regulate temperature. In some cases, solar farms can even reduce surface heat by shading the ground.

Experience and studies show that solar farms have minimal impact on surrounding property values. They are quiet, clean, and produce no odours or pollutants. With screening in place, they are less visually intrusive than many other rural developments.

Most solar farms have a lifespan of 30 to 35 years, with some components lasting even longer. After this period, the site can be decommissioned and either restored or repurposed.

Decommissioning involves disconnecting the system from the grid, removing equipment, and recycling materials like panels, inverters, racking, and cables. The land is then restored to its original condition or made ready for future use.

Yes. Solar farms are non-invasive, so land can typically return to full agricultural use. In many cases, the resting period during solar operation improves soil quality, making the land even more suitable for future farming.
